Cynthia “Ceejay” Johnson, music executive & former VP of Urban Promotions at Columbia Records, is our special guest in Part One of this week’s podcast episode. Ceejay provides an amazing account of her tenure in the music industry which began in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Having been a music executive for a variety of major music labels including Columbia Records, Motown, Arista, Innerscope and more, Ceejay has promoted hit records by such artists as Maxwell, Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, Black Street, Mary Mary and several other R&B/soul artists and groups. She also provides a lens into the music industry from an executive’s perspective by describing her personal experience while touching on the fundamentals of how a major label operates. Given her wealth of knowledge, we will have a Part Two discussion with Ceejay in March, 2019 to continue the discussion with special attention and strategies on how women in the music industry can navigate its twists and turns while still being inspired and motivated within their careers.
